On Cloud Waterproof Review: Are They Actually Worth the Extra $30?

We have all been in this situation: looking at two boxes of shoes that seem the same except one says “Waterproof” and costs thirty dollars more. If you are thinking about buying On Cloud shoes that extra thirty dollars is the difference between having socks and having wet socks on your way to work.. Just because something costs more does not mean it is better for you.

In this On Cloud Waterproof review I want to look past all the marketing talk. I have been testing these shoes for weeks in cloudy weather to answer one question: is the thirty dollar upgrade a good idea or just a way for the company to make more money?

What Is The On Cloud Waterproof?

At first the On Cloud Waterproof looks the same as the regular On Cloud. You still get the Cloud” pods on the bottom and the fast lacing system.

However the “Waterproof” version has a membrane that keeps water out. It is like a layer that keeps your feet dry.

On Cloud Waterproof

Here Are The Key Differences:

Feature
Regular On Cloud | On Cloud Waterproof

  •  Upper Material
  • Breathable Mesh
  • Waterproof Membrane

Weight | Very Light | A Little
Flexibility | Very Flexible | Not As Flexible

Best For | Summer, Gym, Dry Days | Rain, Snow, Winter

Does It Really Work?

If you are paying for a shoe it needs to be waterproof. When I tested the On Cloud Waterproof my socks stayed dry. The membrane is not a coating it is a real barrier that keeps water out.

One thing to remember is that the shoe is not a submarine. If you step in a puddle that’s deeper than the top of the shoe water will get in.. Because the membrane is so good at keeping water out it is also good at keeping water in.

Is The On Cloud Waterproof Less Comfortable?

The truth is, the On Cloud Waterproof feels different on your foot than the version. The waterproof membrane is thicker and less stretchy than the mesh so it feels stiffer when you first put it on.

The “Snug” Factor

Some people, including me find that the waterproof lining makes the shoe feel a little tighter. If you have feet or like a lot of room in your shoes you might want to consider getting a half size bigger.

Breathability: The Big Question

The biggest problem with shoes is that they can make your feet sweat. If a material keeps water out it can also keep sweat in.

In weather the On Cloud Waterproof is great. It keeps your feet warm and dry.. In hot and humid weather your feet might get sweaty.

I think the On Cloud Waterproof is best for three seasons: fall, winter and spring. If you plan to wear them in the summer you might want to stick with the version.

Is The On Cloud Waterproof Worth The Extra Money?

The regular On Cloud costs around one hundred and forty dollars while the Waterproof version costs around one hundred and seventy dollars.

Why the extra thirty dollars is worth it:

If you walk to work or take transportation having dry socks can make a big difference. The waterproof membrane is also very durable. Can withstand salt and slush.

Why you might not want to spend the thirty dollars:

If you only own one pair of shoes and live in a warm place you might not need a waterproof shoe. If you mostly wear your shoes to the gym you also might not need a shoe.

Do The On Cloud Waterproof Shoes Look Good?

On is a company that makes functional shoes look very stylish. The On Cloud Waterproof is no exception. It has a matte finish that looks very premium.

You can wear them with:

  • jackets for a cool and urban look.
  • Jeans or chinos for a casual and stylish look.
  • Athleisure wear for an comfortable look.
  • The all black color is very popular because it hides dirt and looks very sleek.
  • Will The On Cloud Waterproof Shoes Last?

In any review we have to talk about the durability of the shoes. The “Cloud” pods on the bottom of the shoe can sometimes catch rocks. Wear down quickly on rough surfaces.

The new models, the Cloud 5 and 6 have a design that prevents rocks from getting caught and the rubber is more durable.

The Final Verdict

After testing the On Cloud Waterproof here is what I think:

If you live in a city with a lot of rain, like Seattle or London the On Cloud Waterproof is a choice. If you value having feet and want a shoe that can handle winter weather the extra thirty dollars is worth it.

If you live in a warm place or if you prefer shoes that are very breathable you might want to stick with the regular On Cloud. The On Cloud Waterproof is not a gimmick it is a specialized tool. The peace of mind that comes with knowing your feet will stay dry is worth every penny.
